1096Domaine Bunan, Bélouvé 2001  (1096)
Provence, France (Other), Red
Bélouvé (from the Provencal "good grape") is an 18th century country house, formerly belonging to an order of monks who used the cellars to make their wine. Lying surrounded by century-old olive trees and florentine cypresses, the estate has a magical air of calm and serenity. Taken over and rebuilt by the Bunans in 1978, the vineyard furnishes wines under three growth names. Its micro-climate (olives trees were unaffected by the terrible winter of 1956) allows Bélouvé to open the grape harvest every year in the region and saw the first pickers in France in 1993.
Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, Carignan 30%, Cinsault 40%. Stalked grapes macerated 15 days in stainless-steel vats. Matured traditionally in oak tuns. Long-lived but may be drunk young.
Best served at around 18° C with marinated meats or meats with sauce, lamb and all red meats.
$30.95

Weinviertel, Austria, White
Qualitätswein, 13 vol.%, dry
The Hundsleiten vineyard very steep and stony and difficult to work. However, the more than 30-year-old vines reward the work with especially rich and complex wines.

The perfect accompaniment for paella - Albariño is Spain's most expensive white wine and their answer to France's Viognier. 1700Weingut Hiedler, Grüner Veltliner Thal 2003  (1700)
Kamptal, Austria, White
Medium, shining yellow colour; elegant, pleasant bouquet with a smoky tobacco note; spicy palate with a mature fruitiness; this wine reveals a firm character with the complex potential of old vines.
"This first picking of the Thal took place October 5th and 6th and the results are dramatically different from those of Heidler's earlier harvested Gruner Veltliners, not only on account of the time elapsed, but also on account of the genetically diverse selection of vines planted here in the 1930s by Hiedlers grandfather. Ripe orchid fruits, sweet florality and spice are very much in evidence. The wine is overtly dense, even thick on the palate, yet shimmeringly mineral and vivacious, with a striking finish of orange zest, brown spices, malt, fruit pits and flowers." S.Tanzer

This wine is 60% very old vine Grenache and 40% Syrah. Deep mulberry purple in colour, there follows a nose of enticing depth and real dimension. There is a wealth of dry spice on the nose, given extra breadth through notes of chocolate, black coffee, liquorice and that air-dried South African meat, biltong. The fruit character on the nose is dusty bramble and black cherry.

1807San Giusto A Rentennano, Chianti Classico 2002  (1807)
Tuscany, Italy, Red
San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Classico is a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo grapes, hand-picked when perfectly mature. It is fermented in glazed concrete and stainless steel vats for about 14 days. During fermentation the skins and must are pumpedover and punched-down a number of times to extract the maximum qualities from the grapes. After the wine has been racked, the skins are soft-pressed in an horizontal press and the juice thus obtained is added to the wine. Malolactic fermentation is stimulated by heating the building where the vats are stored. The wine is aged in medium sized casks and oak Tonneaux for about 10-12 months, during which period it is racked several times. Before being released, it is held in bottle for at least another 4-5 months.

1732Churchill's, Reserve Port - Vintage Character NV  (1732)
Douro, Portugal, Sweet
Vintage Character Reserve is youthful, fruity and well balanced. Easy to drink, it displays the characteristic firm backbone and structure of Churchill Ports. An ideal introduction to port drinking.
VCR is a Premium Ruby Port blended from the wines of different years from our top grade “A” quintas. It has plenty of structure and layers of flavour. Four years of ageing in oak gives it a measure of complexity whilst still retaining a dark ruby colour, and presenting itself as fresh and fruity.
The quality of this wine is such that it is described as “Vintage Character”, putting it in a category above its competitors.
Because it is refrigerated and filtered prior to bottling, the wine is ready for immediate drinking.

5025Bonny Doon, Cardinal Zin, Zinfandel 2000  (5025)
Sacramento, USA, Red
"Beastly old Vines"
Very complex and luscious wine with lashings of alcohol, liquorice, raspberries, blueberry spice and kirsch. Flavours linger.
The grapes used in the creation of this wine derive in large part from very old vines grown the warm Sacramento Delta area. The secret of old vines is that they can, in principle, owing to their deep roots, more or less always keep their cool. The Zin is supplemented by some extraordinary old vine Carignane grown quite near-by.

Tokaji, Hungary, Sweet
500ml - 4 puttonyos. The height of the winery's wines is the Tokaj Aszú, the free run wine of Tokaj. The Tokaji Aszú is the noblest sweet wine in the world. Its development involves the benign influence of noble rot. It is the wine for which Tsar Peter the Great of Russia sent legions of Cossacks to watch over the wineries of Tokaj and the roads through which it was transported to St. Petersburg, where it was served at the table of Catherine the Great. Voltaire said of this wine, "This wine invigorates every fibre of my brain and, deep in my soul, produces a charming glint of intelligence and good humour”. See: Oremus Web Site for more details.

1741Churchill's, White Port - Dry Aperitif NV  (1741)
Douro, Portugal, Sweet
Situated at 1,200 feet above sea level, the vineyards in the Pinhão valley are perfectly suited for the “Malvasia Fina” white port grape, providing it with all the necessary acidity and balance. This is a White Port that makes a statement. Full flavoured with a dry nutty finish, it’s naturally rich, golden colour is the result of 10 years ageing in wood. The extent of extra ageing gives the white port a balance and smoothness which puts it firmly in a class of its own.
“Clear and bright orange-brown. Quite rich, nutty nose with hints of raisins. Off-dry, rich palate with nutty flavours and a long, fruit finish." – Decanter – July 1996

1735Churchill's, Port - Late Bottled Vintage 1998  (1735)
Douro, Portugal, Sweet
Late Bottled means bottled after 4, rather than 2 years in wood. This LBV is a rich, concentrated port from one good harvest, which has been aged for 4 years in wood. The word “traditional” means that it is bottled without any filtration or refrigeration so that the wine can continue developing in the bottle before it is released for sale, two years later.
At the end of the bottle ageing period, it is ready for immediate drinking. Or alternatively, and this is purely optional, it can be cellared for a few more years to acquire one of the more pronounced characteristics of Vintage Port, which is a “bottle nose” - at which stage it may have formed a sediment and require to be decanted.
Churchill's use dark coloured glass bottles, as for Vintage Port, and driven corks so that the wine can be laid down horizontally in a private cellar.
“Medium, full body. Lots of fruit. Medium tannin. Medium sweetness. Reminiscent of black fruits, leather, sweet tobacco. Classy and rich with youthful character prevalent” – The Wine Enthusiast – LBV Champion – 91 points.
“A very fresh LBV, with violet, berry and cherry character. Medium-bodied and medium sweet, with a fresh fruit aftertaste. Delicious. Drink now." – James Suckling – Wine Spectator

1135Castello Banfi, Cum Laude 1999  (1135)
Tuscany, Italy, Red
Castello Banfi's newest Super Tuscan cuveé, Cum Laude - Latin for "with honours" - combines 25% of a Banfi clonal selection of the region's historic Brunello grape, with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 15% Syrah. Each wine is individually vinified and aged 14 months in French oak barrique to develop its unique style, then masterfully interwoven with the others to achieve an elegant bouquet and full, round flavour. Cum Laude is characterised by a rich colour and soft, ripe fruit flavours. The wine is complex with aromas of juicy berries and spicy cherries, as well as clove, anise and black pepper. As a full-bodied red with dense tannins, it marries well with all red meats, hearty stews, pasta dishes and cheeses.

1739Churchill's, Crusted Port NV  (1739)
Douro, Portugal, Sweet
Crusted Port is a style of wine that was invented by English wine merchants when port was still being shipped in bulk and blended to their specification.
Crusted Port is made up of the very best wines from two or sometimes three different harvests. It is kept in wood for up to two years and then bottled for further maturation. As this blend is not subject to any fining or filtration it continues to develop and mature in bottle. Given sufficient time, it throws a thick sediment, otherwise called a “Crust”. This is the English word from which it derives its name.
Churchill’s Crusted, bottled in 2000 and aged in bottle in their cellars for a minimum of 3 years, is a full bodied port which has acquired the rich mellowness and dinstinctive “nose” usually associated with mature Vintage Port. It can be consumed now or laid down for a few more years. The wine is sealed with a driven cork allowing it to breathe and the bottle to be stored lying down. Care needs to be taken not to disturb the “crust”. When the bottle is taken from the horizontal position, it is best to leave it standing upright for a period of 24 hours prior to decanting.
Crusted Port is even closer in style to Vintage Port than “traditional” LBV. It presents a dense, concentrated wine for far less than the price of a Vintage Port.
In his tasting notes the wine maker, Johnny Graham, describes it as “rich and jammy, beginning to show the benefits of bottle age”.

Ribera del Duero, Spain, Red
Within the Vega Sicilia family. Alión is a solid wine, and is the height of expression of the tinto fino grape ripened in the sun and intelligently made into wine. Its colour is concentrated, dark with a luminous and seductive edge, typical of its youth and seasoned by the wood. The aroma is unveiled with an intensity that is not very frequent in the wines form the Ribera del Duero designation of origin. It appears with hints of roast from the grape and top-quality wood. On the palate, the sweetened tannins of the concentrated black fruits blend with the dry creamy tannins of the French oak. It is full of flavour, strong, fleshy and unfolds a truly suggestive range of tastes

The Pagos Viejos (literally "old debts") vineyard is the most ancient of Artadi's holdings, and contains 75 year old Tempranillo vines. The winemaking is very traditional with fermentation taking place in oak, often accompanied by small quantities of white grapes (Viura and Macabeo) and then secondary fermentation and aging in new French Oak for 18 months. This wine is one of the top few, or perhaps the most sought after wine from Rioja, and has received a lot of attention from the critics around the world.
